Material Stone
Product Care Granite and laterite rocks which are believed to have originated in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu are given a unique local character by the stone carvers of Kerala. Granite is commonly used material for all stone carved products and a specific variety known as krishnashila which is sourced from Omalur in Pathanamthitta district and from Tirthala in the south Malabar, and is used for the sculpting of temple idols.Mahadeva Temple at Kazhakuttam and the Vaddakkunathan Temple at Thrissur were built by using Laterite, the red muddy stone that is abundantly available throughout Kerala and is also used for domestic structures. Although soft when quarried, it rapidly hardens on coming into contact with the elements and transforms into a highly durable and strong construction material. Also the stone is somewhat porous which allow the rock to breathe in the humid tropical heat. The use of laterite appears to be suffering a decline due to the changing aesthetic of the local populace, who prefer cement as a building material.
