Peaceful Stone Statue Of Buddha In Abhaya Mudra Pose Holding A Alms Bowl For Garden

This beautiful Buddha is quietly seated with his right hand raised in abhaya mudra position and complemented by the left hand which is held flat in the lap in the dhyana mudra of meditation which symbolizes the union of method and wisdom, samasara and nirvana, and also the realizations of the conventional and ultimate truths. His left hand holds a small alms bowl in it. The Buddha has a third eye on his forehead representing higher consciousness. This statue is carved from the soft stone of Orissa by artisans whose ancestors have practiced this craft of stone carving for centuries. Hammers and chisels of various sizes and shapes, called the Muna, Patili, Martual, Thuk-Thuki and Nitana are used to bring life these life-like figures from featureless stone. Once engraved, the finishing Is done by scrapping out the extra material using a flat-edged iron tool.
