This Kalighat Painting depicts Saraswati who is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, art, wisdom, and learning. Traditional scroll painters -patuas, developed the Kalighat painting style and changed their linear narrative styles and adopted single pictures with one or two figures over a period of time. Kalighat paintings were essentially water color paintings executed on paper and are characterized by their bold sweeping brush lines, bold colours and a simplification of forms. They depict Hindu gods, goddesses, and other mythological characters and a variety of themes from daily urban life of that time. Vertical Folk Art of Bengal on Paper in 14X22 inches. This painting is without frame.
