Namastey! Let's get to know each other a bit here. This is a small brief below.
Abstract Mat weaving is an important traditional handicraft of Tamil Nadu which is famous for its korai dry-grass mats. Mat weavers from here not only create intricate patterns and designs, but mats are multicoloured and often represent the ornate pallav of traditional silk sari from Tamil Nadu. Mat weaving is one of the oldest of mans creations done with joining grass with grass and interlacing leaves. The nice pattu pais of Pattamadai are the tradional gifts for important functions. They are produced in different shapes, sizes and colours as regular floor mats, small prayer mats, dining mats and wall hangings. Artisans involved are mostly women, the art acquires its sheen and fine texture in the hands of women, but now the younger women are increasing taking to other work which is faster and easier, fetching them higher returns. The major worry is the lack of women weavers now. Paradoxically the shrinking tribe remains in search of support and wider recognition.
Social organisations like Respect Origins has undertaken the mission of reviving this craft which will lead to employment generation in village and prevent the craft from becoming extinct. Respect Origins works to promote arts and crafts from Indian Heritage. They set-up this online store for artisans, who don't not need to promote their products by writing about them or selling them themselves. Respect Origins do all the marketing, courier and payment gateways also.
