Smitaben belongs to the khatri community of Kutch who have been practicing the art of tie and dye for centuries. She uses natural yellow, red, blue, green and black color for dyeing the fabric which is tied with a thread at multiple points and thus producing variety of patterns like Chandrakala, Bavan Baug,Shikari etc.
