Pichwai Painting are a classic form of painting that originated almost 400 years ago in the sacred town of Nathdwara which is located near Udaipur in the Indian State of Rajasthan. Pichwai Paintings require immense skill and precision and can even take months to prepare. In the following painting, we observe the dancing gopis and cows. The Gopis in the painting are not ordinary women. It is believed that they are sages who went through rigorous Tapasaya(deep meditation) in solitude in their previous births and they were rewarded to be as Gopis in their next life cycle. Gopis are the friends of Lord Krishna. Whenever Lord Krishna would play the flute, the gopis would get mesmerized by the tune of the flute and danced to the melody. It is a vertical pichwai painting made on a cotton cloth(48 x 45inches). It is without frame.
